Job Title: Health and Safety Officer (01)
Reports to: HR & Administration Officer
Duty Station: Soroti.

Purpose of the Job:

To ensure a safe working environment by implementing health and safety policies, conducting risk assessments, and ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations. The Health and Safety Officer plays a key role in preventing accidents, injuries, and health issues at the workplace.

Job Summary:

The Health and Safety Officer is responsible for promoting a positive health and safety culture within the workplace. The role involves conducting regular risk assessments, safety inspections, and audits. The officer ensures compliance with legal standards and provides training to employees on safety practices.

Job Description:

• Conduct regular risk assessments to identify potential hazards in the workplace.
• Develop, implement, and review risk management procedures to reduce workplace accidents and health hazards.
• Ensure that the organization complies with all local, national, and international health and safety regulations and standards.
• Keep up to date with changes in health and safety legislation and communicate updates to the relevant departments.
• Conduct regular safety inspections of the workplace to identify hazards and recommend corrective actions.
• Monitor and audit health and safety policies, procedures, and compliance.
• Investigate workplace accidents, incidents, and near-misses to determine their root cause.
• Prepare detailed reports on the incidents and recommend corrective actions to prevent future occurrence
• Organize and deliver training programs for employees on health and safety practices, emergency procedures, and the proper use of safety equipment.
• Promote awareness of workplace health and safety policies among staff.
• Develop and implement emergency response plans, including evacuation procedures, fire drills, and first-aid support.
• Coordinate with emergency services when necessary.
• Maintain accurate records of health and safety incidents, training sessions, risk assessments, and safety inspections.
• Prepare health and safety reports for senior management and external regulatory bodies as required.
• Ensure that employees are provided with the necessary protective equipment and that it is properly maintained and used.
• Monitor the availability of PPE and ensure compliance with safety standards.
• Assist in developing and updating the company’s health and safety policies and procedures.
• Ensure policies are communicated to all employees and are consistently followed.
• Work closely with department managers, supervisors, and other stakeholders to promote a culture of safety.
• Liaise with external auditors, safety consultants, and government regulators regarding health and safety matters.

Qualifications Required:

Education:

• Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, or a related field (preferred).
• Certification in health and safety (e.g., NEBOSH, IOSH, OSHA) is essential.

Certifications:

• NEBOSH International General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety.
• IOSH Managing Safely Certificate (or equivalent).
• First Aid certification (advantageous).

Experience:

• Minimum 3-5 years of experience working in a health and safety role, ideally in a manufacturing, industrial, or construction environment.
• Experience in conducting safety inspections, audits, and risk assessments.
• Proven experience in training employees on safety procedures and managing safety compliance.
